Because sometimes you need to poke a hornet's nest, just to see what happens . . . .

While getting my daily fix of NPR, and listening to the X-teenth report on the various presidential candidates 18 months before the actual friggin' election, I began to ponder the Democratic field and its two current frontrunners. And as the debate rages on (is Hilary electable? Is Obama a flash in the pan? Did Vilsack drop out because no one was sure how to spell his name?), a question keeps turning over in my head. No, the question is not Clinton vs. Obama. I'm not convinced that those two are the only variables in the equation. 18 months before the 1992 election, most people in this country had no idea who Bill Clinton was; 18 months before the 2004 election, Howard Dean was the odds-on favorite for the Democratic nomination.

No, my question is more of the academic variety. Discounting the current crop of candidates and just speaking in generalities, my question to you, dear Internets, is this:

Which do you think this country will elect to the presidency first, a woman or a member of a racial/ethnic minority?

Leave your insightful comments/poorly-spelled diatribes here.

the safe money is on Old White Guy to win, place, and/or show.

Yeah, yeah, I know that NOW. But I mean someday, which of our irrational prejudices do you think we'll shake off first?

honestly? i'm gonna go for ethnicity, cause dudes still won't vote for a woman, but could vote for another dude. Even if he's not white. When do you think we'll elect someone who is not a Christian? yeah, good luck

also, i'd say, probably someone hispanic. it's the largest minority now, and they aren't black.

When will we elect someone who declares he/she is not a Christian, or when will we elect someone who claims to be a Christian but belies that with his or her actions? 'Cause I don't know about option A, but one could argue that Option B has come down the pike many times.

I was going for someone who was generally not Christian, say, Buddhist, or Jewish, or Hindu, or something completely different. B has happened quite a bit, but it's been about 200 years or so since we've seen option A. But even then, those guys attended church, even though it was primarily to interact with the rest of the community.

Please Tell Valerie not to flatter herself. There aren't internet strangers that hate her. I know her. I get drunk at night and taunt her for fun from my couch. Tell her to get a sense of humor...name it Boots II.
